“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” — Psalm 19:14
Most believers know that once they have accepted the gift of salvation that they are acceptable to the LORD… so acceptable that He allows us to be heirs to the throne with Him (Galatians 4:7). He promises that He will keep us until the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:12-14; 4:30). And He even gives us His Holy Spirit to guide us in all of the affairs of life on earth. Even so, we still struggle with the fleshly nature in which we are born and sometimes we make bad choices, which do not please the LORD (1 Corinthians 2:3-4).
In this small verse from the Psalms the writer expresses his plea to the LORD … his earnest desire to be acceptable in the sight of the LORD. Not only does he ask that his speech be right, but also everything that he holds in his heart. Isn’t it the heart that often gets us in trouble? Perhaps that is why the prophet Jeremiah wrote: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9)
So then, how can we be acceptable in His sight? Something that works very well to put us on the right track is to start the day in the Word. No need to have an hour and a half Bible study, but just 15 minutes with the LORD. First thing in the morning, before you take on any other task, open your Bible and read from it. Then think about it … meditate upon it. This is how the “meditation of our heart” is acceptable in the sight of the LORD. Spending time in His word and allowing that word to penetrate our being is how we think on the right things (Philippians 4:8-9), speak the right things (Ephesians 5:19) and do the right things (James 1:22).
There are no perfect people here on earth but when we make it a practice to be daily in the Word our mouth and our heart will produce the things that are acceptable in the sight of the LORD. Spending time in the Word is how we have fellowship with God and when we walk with God we walk in the light and this allows us to have sweet fellowship with one another as well (1 John 1:5-7).
Enjoy this song from Natalie Grant “Perfect People”. Come to the LORD just as you are and let Him change you so that you too can “be acceptable” in His sight. He loves you and is waiting for you.
Things to Think About and Do
1. Begin tomorrow in the Word and as you read jot down some notes about what you read then think on it.
2. Look up all of the cross references that are in this post. Make notes about how they apply to the theme verse.
3. Say something nice to three people.
