Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians 4:29
There is not a day that goes by when I do not hear the most extreme of cuss words from men, women, and children of all ages. Sadly, it is now common to even hear parents using the “F-Bomb” when yelling at their children. Then, they wonder why their children are disrespectful and out of control when they get older. Not long ago, there was a small group of boys sitting on a stairwell close to where we live and they were listening to what I call porno-rap. Porno-rap is rap music where the rapper tells in extremely graphic details of what he did to a woman while being intimate. I approached the boys and spoke to them about what they were listening to. After they responded I explained to them that listening to that type of music and using that kind of speech attracts a certain type of people. I added that when someone has no regard for how their words impact others, it causes great damage to their relationships, especially with small children. I told them that as they get older, long term relationships with women and even job prospects can be adversely impacted by “corrupt communication.” Amazingly, the boys listened to what I had to say and I seldom hear that music anymore. But, taking the time to talk to them demonstrates that God’s Word is true, that good communications does edify and minister grace to the hearers. Since that day, when I see one of the boys, they say hi to me in passing. As believers, we must learn how to take the things that God tells us and teach them to others in a way that makes sense (2 Timothy 2:2). Thankfully, the boys listened that day and I do not know what kind of long term effect my words will have. But, I pray that that little bit of time I shared with them a principle from God’s Word makes a difference in their lives and more importantly, in light of eternity, gives glory to God.
