Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God (Deuteronomy 8:11)
Wildflowers
I love wildflowers even though I am allergic to so many of them. One of my favorites is the Forget-me-not.
The Forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica) is a simple five petal flower, usually blue, that first buds as pink and at maturity has white and yellow also. Not only is it a pretty little flower but for medical purposes the Forget-me-not may be used as an astringent to treat minor wounds. Many brides choose Forget-me-nots because they are symbolic of true love, devotion, fidelity and respect.
Forget-me-nots work well as a ground cover, however, if you do not regularly deadhead them, they will become invasive and choke out other plants. Deadheading means to remove and discard dead flowers because they take away nutrients from new buds trying to grow. Some folks even consider Forget-me-nots to be a weed. Cultivation is key to enjoying these lovely little flowers.
I have been thinking about Forget-me-nots because it reminds me of how the LORD says we should forget Him not in today’s key Bible verse (Deuteronomy 8:11). And how easy is it to forget what the LORD tells us to remember? How easy is it to forget all the benefits of salvation?
Let’s explore this theme of remembering and not forgetting what the LORD has done for His children because of their faith in Christ:
Believers will Live and Never Die
John 11:25-26 – Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
John 11:40 – Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 6:40 – And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Romans 6:26 – For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 5:24 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Matthew 25:46 – And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Believers are Adopted into God’s Family and Have an Inheritance
Ephesians 1:13-14 – In whom [Christ] ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Galatians 3:26 – For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
2 Peter 1:4 – Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Titus 3:7 – That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Acts 20:32 – And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Romans 8:17 – And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Colossians 1:12 – Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
1 Peter 1:3-5 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Believers Have Authority NOT Bondage
Galatians 3:22-23 – But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
James 4:7 – Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Matthew 21:21 – Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
Luke 17:6 – And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
Hebrews 2:14 – Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Romans 6:8 – Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Galatians 5:1 – Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Believers Have the Power of God and Holy Spirit and All the Fruit
Romans 3:22 – For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Romans 15:16 – Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Romans 8:6 – For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Hebrews 4:12 – For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
1 Corinthians 2:10 – But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
Ephesians 3:16-19 – That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Acts 4:31 – And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
Galatians 5:22-24 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Believers Have Eternal Security of Redemption (Glorification)
1 John 5:13 – These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
John 10:28 – And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand
Ephesians 1:7-14 – In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 4:30 – And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Romans 8:30 – Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
Life Application
Isn’t it just wonderful to remember and not forget all the benefits of salvation? You see, just like the Forget-me-not flowers, you must also cultivate your mind to keep that forgetfulness from being invasive. The way we cultivate our mind on the things of God is to wash it with His word daily (Ephesians 5:26). As your read these verses today you have “deadheaded” your forgetfulness. Remember to stay in His word and you will “forget not the LORD thy God”. And just like David we may sing “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:2). Count on God’s words to be your astringent to heal your forgetfulness.
