“For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” — Romans 14:11
As I read today’s verse and I think of all those on this planet that think they believe there is no God. I say “think they believe” because deep down in their conscience everyone knows there is one true God, Creator of heaven and earth.
You see Him everywhere. All creation groans for His glory (Romans 8:18-25). The Heavens declare his handiwork (Psalm 19:1). The Bible even tells us that no one has an excuse to say there is no God because it is clearly seen in His creation:
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. (Romans 1:20-21)
Just like everything else in life, it all comes down to choice. The Bible is clear “they knew God, they glorified him not as God“. And that’s all because “they became vain in their imaginations”. You see they knew God and they had the light in their heart, otherwise Paul would not have continued on to say that “their foolish heart was darkened”. In order for something to be darkened it must first have had light, correct? So then, everyone at one time or another knows the truth in their heart that there is only One True God.
Choosing a Ruler on earth
The choice to believe that God is the Almighty and the One who Rules over everything is one that each and every human on earth makes. Everyone has a “god” … even the atheist. The god of their heart may not be the One True God of the Bible, but they do have a god. Many times the one who claims there is no One True God says this because they have become so “vain” that the god of their heart is actually themselves. On this earth they may choose to believe there is no God and that is simply something that they have convinced themselves of in their own foolish heart. “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” (Psalm 14:1). The fact of the matter is that some people on this earth, no matter what you tell them will choose to believe there is no God as long as they live and breathe. They do this because they are too proud to admit that they are wrong and God is right. Remember “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
After this Life
Every human that leaves this planet will stand before the One True God. For the believer, he will stand there at the Judgment Seat of Christ, to test the works that he has done on earth, whether those works are worthy of rewards or not (1 Corinthians 3:11-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10). This is not to determine eternal life (salvation) because that was already determined the moment that they believed the gospel of truth (Ephesians 1:12-14; 4:30). For the unbeliever, he will stand before God at the Great White Throne and he will be judged according to his works as well (Revelation 20:12-15) and then cast into the Lake of Fire. There is no chance of eternal life once you leave this planet as an unbeliever.
It is the One True God that will be judging those works for both the believer and the unbeliever. He is the Ruler and every knee will bow to Him and every tongue will confess to God at one of these two judgments.
He is the One and Only Ruler
Even over the unbeliever, God reigns:
God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness. (Psalm 47:8)
He is greater than any god:
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. (Psalm 95:3)
He is King of kings and Lord of lords:
For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding. (Psalm 47:7)
Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; (1 Timothy 6:15)
He is on the throne and is over all:
Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. (Psalm 45:6)
The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. (Psalm 103:19)
I have only scratched the surface of what the Bible says about our One True God. He Rules and there is only One and there will never be any other (Is 45:5). God says this:
“I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth [in] righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.” (Isaiah 45:23)
Everyone has a “god” and a ruler, what do you believe?
