Know My Heart

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” ~ Psalm 139:23-24

You can run but you can’t hide; God knows your heart. Reading the above passage, of course the first thing that popped into my head was the popular hymn that is based upon this verse. Here, I have included a video so you can listen and sing along and then you will have this song in your heart too.

The Bible encourages us to have a song in our heart. I think of what Paul wrote in Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Paul writes this to encourage the church at Colossea of how they should be as new creatures … that put off, put on … Colossians 3 begins with:  “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” The singing is an outward expression of inward peace, joy and love.  When you have God’s Word in your heart it helps you not to sin against Him (Psalms 119:11). It is the heart that shows your real and true thoughts.

In today’s verse, the psalmist is pleading with God to show him the right way … to keep him from evil. When we ask the LORD to help us in this regard He will be pleased to remind us that Holy Spirit is here with us to help us to walk in the Spirit.

I once heard someone say “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t no one happy”. Is it not true that the mama is usually the first one out of bed? When she has some time to spend in the Word first thing in the morning, her day will begin well. Daily in the Word is how we renew our mind and hide God’s Word in our heart. When His Word is there, the “wicked way” can not be. Begin your day right, spend some time with the Lord. You will be refreshed and renewed and then everyone else in your house will be blessed too.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is ~ Psalms 63:1
