Lamentations 3:21-25 ( KJV ) 21This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
We all have those days when it seems like everything is going wrong. Not long ago my hubby was doing some “honey do” jobs and twice he was shocked by electricity in outlets that should have been “dead” according to the circuit breaker box, he was stuck twice with wires and he dropped the screw driver on his toe. He finally said “What the heck is going on today?” I suppose it just might have been one of those days when there was lots and lots to do and it was just not smooth sailing. My daughter would say we should read some Psalms, have some chocolate, take a warm bath and go to bed.
Some time ago Prompt #15 over at Faithful Blogging asked the question:“When you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or down what Bible verses do you refer to?” I find this to be an excellent question and one that we often use when Biblically counseling folks for anxiety and depression at Selah Mountain Ministries. We almost always recommend that folks memorize the following passage which reminds us of the things that we should be thinking on:
Philippians 4:6-9 ( KJV ) 6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
My personal favorite passage that comes to mind is at the beginning of this post — Lamentations 3:21-25. It is a constant reminder that the LORD is merciful and compassionate and because of that we can count on Him to be our portion.
Sometimes when we are in the middle of a “firestorm” we just don’t know where to turn. This is why it is so important that we memorize scriptures and store them in our heart so that when we are having a tough day we can recall them to our mind and meditate upon them. I have gathered a few verses over at WhatChristiansWantToKnow.com that I would like to share. Perhaps it will be helpful for you to take a look at the following posts:
Bible Verses for Times of Adversity
The Bible is a great place to look when you need to renew your mind (Romans 12:1-2). When you are meditating on the word and spending time learning what it is that God wants to communicate to you through His word, it is impossible to be overwhelmed, depressed or down.
