Seeing God in the Small Things

By Candi Allen

I  just shouldn’t be amazed anymore at the way God works in the little things in my life. I was sitting around at home with my two toddlers feeling very bummed that I could not go hang out with my best bud today.  I love motherhood, but there are days when I hate being responsible and saying no to fun for a day so that I can get the things done that I need to.

As I took the kids outside this morning I was sitting around dwelling on my sorrows instead of my joys.  People who know me will agree that I hate when things don’t go how I’d like them to.  So instead of being thankful for a little girl being here for me to watch (this is how God has provided the money we have needed to get out of debt this year) I was just sulking.  I really wanted to just forget my responsibilities and go hang out with my friend.

Then my neighbor walked over to our fence in the back (we share a driveway).  She was very upset and needed someone to talk to.  This girl is such a sweet girl who loves life and acknowledges all the things that God has created around us, but I do not think she is a believer.  She has recently faced tons of challenges in life (loss of job, abusive boyfriend, and a dying dog… her beloved pet!). In the midst of her tears my selfishness hit me like a ton of bricks — I needed to stay home today, even though I did not want to… and God chose to use my simple choice to be a blessing to this girl.  I know if God can save a person like me He can save this girl.  She knows we are Christians.  What a great opportunity to just be a listening ear for her when her world is crumbling around her.

Will you pray with me that this girl will see Christ in us? Will you pray that I will have the boldness to share the gospel with her… not just through a specific conversation, but through my life and attitude about life? I am bummed that I didn’t get to spend the day with my best bud, but I am so very thankful for God’s plan for my day.

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.  Ephesians 6:18-20
