Our Good Merciful God

By Pamela Rose Williams

“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.” — Psalm 136:1,26

Today’s verses makes it easy to meditate. What better thing to spend time on in meditation than that of the LORD. He is good … even when our day is not so good.

I often hear people say “God is Good … ALL the time”. I especially hear this expression when someone is going through some sort of trial. Focusing on the goodness of the LORD, especially in hard times is the only way that you will be able to maintain the kind of attitude that the LORD wants you to have. Our attitude should be one of thankfulness for everything that we have.

In our verses we see that the psalmist talks about the the enduring mercy of the LORD. Have you ever just sat and thought about that? We do some wretched things … even after we are saved. God is merciful and He allows us to continually do the things that sometimes hurt others and hurt God Himself.

Without His grace we would still be sinners miserably lost on our way to hell.

Without His mercy we would not enjoy the everlasting forgiveness that God offers.

Don’t take it for granted … the LORD could say today that He has had enough of our disobedience and take us out of this world. True, those that are saved by grace through faith will still enjoy eternal life in heaven, but what about all the souls we could have led to Jesus had we stayed on earth a little longer?

The words in Psalm 118:1 are very similar. Take a look at how the children sing it. It will warm your heart.
